A dream about Baby Hutch

Several days ago, I had a funny dream about Baby Hutch. I dreamt that Casey had gone into labor, but for some reason, I was required to go out and pick up something from the store during her labor. When I returned, I found Casey with a happy, red-headed, baby boy! I was so excited, and I reached out to hold Baby Hutch with tears in my eyes. As I held the baby, I looked down and noticed that he was snuggling down into my arms. Then, he started purring like a kitten! I guess I just had cats on the brain after taking care of two foster kittens (please adopt them someone!) and Clyde and Wrigley.

What's that I feel?

In Kerry's last post he mentioned that I was having a hard time determining what was indigestion versus what was Baby Hutch. That sounds really silly but let me explain: I was told by many that I would know when I felt the baby because it would feel like "fluttering" or "little bubbles." If that was ever the case, I was completely oblivious to it. I kept waiting to feel flutters and in the meantime, I was feeling what felt like pushing or kicking. I was also told that I wouldn't be able to feel anything on the outside - only on the inside. That wasn't the case either! I could put my hand on my belly and feel the same push/kick I was feeling on the inside.

The last trip to our midwife confirmed that sure enough, what I was feeling was indeed Baby Hutch. For a long time I thought Baby Hutch just liked to sleep a lot but now, whenever I'm sitting real still or laying down, I can feel B.H. moving around in there. Kerry has even been able to feel him/her and likes to imagine B.H. floating along pushing off of the "walls" to swim over to the other side. You have to admit, it's a pretty funny image.

Not too long ago we were looking at the baby books from both Kerry and B.H's Aunt Krista and if I recall correctly, Kerry's dad wrote that Kerry was "all-go." So, I am preparing myself for an all-go little one who likes to be awake, eat (and swim?!) when I'm trying to sleep! I can't wait :)

Daddy Hutch connects with Baby Hutch

I have been wanting to post to the Blog ever since Casey created it, but until today I didn't really know what to say that hadn't been already said by Casey. I've been sort of growing into the idea of being a parent ever since Casey and I first started thinking about trying to have kids. For the first several weeks, however, I felt like a little like the waterboy on the sidelines while Casey was in the game every day. I suppose the process of taking care of a pregnant woman is good training for fatherhood because I slowly started feeling more a part of the pregnancy as I continued to help Casey adjust to the new experience. It was still hard to feel like I was directly involved. Then, something happened today that really made me feel connected to our baby; I heard a heartbeat.

We had our third visit with Kim, our midwife, today, and we were able to hear Baby Hutch's heartbeat with a stethoscope. Kim listened first and told us that although she heard the heartbeat we might not be able to hear it because we weren't used to listening for it like she is. Casey and I both had no trouble hearing Baby Hutch's booming beat. I was at once amazed and joyous.

Now that I've had time to reflect on the experience, I do not think my feelings had much to do with actually being able to hear the heartbeat. As I said weeks ago when Casey and I were offered the opportunity to hear the heartbeat through the Doppler unit, I had no doubt that our baby had a heartbeat. I think that hearing the heartbeat was just the catalyst that I needed to help me convert the abstract idea of a baby into a personal connection with existence and a living being.

Casey has started feeling Baby Hutch move, too! She wasn't sure whether she was feeling baby movement or indigestion, but now she's starting to tell the difference between the two.

TheBump.com says that Baby Hutch is the size of an onion and that fingerprints are forming. That's all I have to report now, but I plan to post more soon.

Mother's Day

My very first maternity shirt as well as my very last Mother's Day pre-child.

We spent Mother's Day at the Hutchersons. Here, Kerry is giving Baby Hutch a pat.
